Match Reports - 1880's
St. Luke's Choir 14-0 St. Chad's Juniors (HT 6-0)
Derbyshire Football Association Under 15 Junior Shield
St. Luke's Choir : Whealdon, goal; L. Broughall and A. Hooley, backs; Trueman, Leater, and Riley, half-backs; B. Gutch and Armitage, right wing; Hearne and Eley, left wing; Rose, centre.
St. Chad's Juniors : Mason, goal; Spendlove and Chadwick, backs; Fletcher, Bagnall and Ellia, half-backs; Brigs and Swan, right wing; Cooper and Walters, left wing; Bloomer, centre.
Umpires : Messrs. Ellis and Wigley.
Referee : Mr. S. Richardson.
This match, in which the competitors were necessarily less than 15 years of age, turned out a one-sided affair. St. Luke's Choir had achieved some tall performances during the course of the competition, and they were generally expected to prove successful. They had the wind in their favour in the first half, and they gave their opponents little chance from the outset. During the first half St. Luke's scored six goals, and in the second half against the wind they added eight more, thus winning by 14 goals to none. St. Chad's seldom broke away and they only caused the opposing goalkeeper to handle once. Bloomer played a good game in the centre for St. Chad's but was badly supported. St. Luke's were in capital form, and whenever they broke away their onslaught was inevitable. The play of Hearne and Eley on the left wing was a treat to witness, and these players ought certainly to be heard of again. Leater, Riley, Armitage, and Rose also played well, although the whole team played together splendidly.
The Shield and medals were afterwards presented to the winners by the Hon. Mrs. W. M. Jarvis.
