Bloomer Strips

Derby Midland Football Club
Note: photograph taken in the grounds of The Midland Hotel, Derby by photographers W.W. Winter Ltd. based at 45 Midland Road, Derby in season 1888-1889. Steve Bloomer is not in the line-up. He played one full game for 'Midland' on Friday 27th March 1891 before  being transferred to Derby County during the closed season. Derby County briefly adopted Midland's strip which but with plain black shorts and socks unlike in the earlier photograph below. This happened as part of a deal between the two Clubs before Midland agreed to fold as a going concern. Midland had themselves done a similar thing to Derby when adopting this same strip from Derby Town Football Club, (the true forerunners of Derby County) whom they effectively forced out of business. This is also why for a very brief spell Derby County's reserve '2nd team' were re-named 'Derby Town' from their original reserve 2nd Team name of Derby Wanderers, in recognition of the defunct Derby Town Football Club.
